We are seeking a qualified and experienced Animal Health Assistant (veterinary nurse) to work in a vibrant shelter environment on a fabulous Caribbean island with a tax-free salary. A passion for animal welfare and animal rescue is a must.
The Cayman Islands Humane Society is the only non-profit rehoming facility on the islands. We operate adoption, foster, stray care and community veterinary services for cats and dogs. We are an open-admission shelter with a no-kill ethos and are based in the heart of George Town in Grand Cayman. The role may involve occasional overnight visits to Little Cayman and Cayman Brac.
Main duties:
• Assist in a range of surgical procedures including IV Catherization, induction, intubation and monitoring anesthesia of patients at varying risk levels.
• Nursing sick animals and administering medication.
• Communicate with staff and pet owners, gaining trust and reassuring them about animal treatment.
• Assist education of pet owners and wider community on animal health, including spay and neuter, vaccinations, worming, flea prevention and appropriate nutrition.
• Working with a team of animal care staff, volunteers and trustees and sharing detailed prognoses and care plans provided by the vet.
• Reviewing and keeping up to date with global information and available materials on shelter medicine.
• Assist in the supervision and training of staff.
• Maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of the practice.
The normal working week will be 40 hours per week.
