Island Recycling Ltd. is seeking an experienced Metals Processor/Site Operative/Driver to join our metal recycling operation. This is not an entry-level or trainee heavy-equipment position. Applicants must have demonstrated hands-on experience operating heavy machinery in an industrial environment.
The successful applicant will be responsible for:
• Safely operating heavy equipment used in the movement, sorting, processing and preparation of recyclable materials.
• Operating excavators’/material handlers, front-end loaders and other heavy machinery as required.
• Operating equipment with grapple, magnet and other material-handling attachments, where applicable.
• Loading, unloading, moving, sorting and stockpiling ferrous and non-ferrous metals and other recyclable materials.
• Processing and preparing materials for export in accordance with company standards.
• Completing daily pre-operation and post-operation machinery inspections and accurately completing equipment checklists.
• Identifying and immediately reporting mechanical, hydraulic, safety or operational issues.
• Carrying out routine preventative maintenance, cleaning and minor repairs where trained and authorized.
• Assessing daily tasks with the team and coordinating work with management.
• Safely loading and unloading trucks, containers and other transport equipment as required.
• Calculating, manifesting, listing and documenting processed materials in accordance with company procedures.
• Safely operating machinery around employees, customers, vehicles, buildings and stockpiled materials within an active recycling facility.
• Properly parking, isolating, securing and storing machinery at the end of operations.
• Cleaning machinery and completing washdowns as required.
• Maintaining a clean and safe work area, including sweeping, raking, shoveling and general site maintenance.
• Cleaning and returning tools and equipment to their designated areas.
• Performing manual labor and heavy lifting when required.
• Following all company health, safety, environmental and operational procedures.
• Carrying out other reasonable recycling-site duties as required.
These responsibilities retain the operational requirements from your original advertisement, including machinery inspections, routine maintenance/repairs, material processing, documentation, equipment shutdown and general site cleaning.
Required Experience & Qualifications
• Minimum 5+ years of verifiable, hands-on experience operating heavy equipment in a recycling, waste-management, construction, industrial or similar heavy-duty environment.
• Demonstrated experience operating multiple types of heavy machinery.
• Experience operating excavators’/material handlers and front-end loaders.
• Ability to operate heavy equipment safely and independently with minimal supervision.
• Experience conducting daily equipment inspections and identifying basic mechanical, hydraulic or operational faults.
• Experience with basic preventative maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
• Ability to read, write and accurately complete machinery checklists, manifests, material records and other operational documentation.
• Valid driver's license is appropriate to the duties of the position.
• Clean police clearance.
• Ability to communicate effectively with management, coworkers and customers.
• Ability to perform heavy lifting and manual labor in an outdoor industrial environment.
• Ability to work weekends and public holidays when operationally required.
• High school education or equivalent.
The following would be considered an advantage:
• Previous experience working in a scrap-metal recycling yard, waste-management facility or industrial material-processing operation.
• Experience operating material handlers or excavators equipped with grapple and/or magnet attachments.
• Experience handling and sorting ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
• Mechanical aptitude and experience performing basic maintenance or repairs on heavy equipment.
• Experience loading export containers or preparing processed materials for shipment.

Position Details
Hours: 45 hours per week
Salary: CI$8.75–CI$12.00 per hour, commensurate with qualifications and experience
