The Digital & Visual Editor is a senior editorial leader, responsible for elevating Compass Media’s digital and visual journalism across all platforms. This role oversees digital content strategy, cross-platform storytelling, video-first journalism, and newsroom training, ensuring that every story is conceived, crafted, and delivered in the most impactful way for Digital, TV, print and social audiences.
Reporting to the Head of News & Content, and working closely with the Deputy Head of Content & Programming, News Director (TV), and Managing Editor (print), the Digital & Visual Editor is a central architect of Compass Media’s editorial future.
Role summary
The Digital & Visual Editor blends editorial strategy, visual storytelling, digital innovation, and audience intelligence. They drive the evolution of storytelling across platforms, mentor journalists in video and digital techniques, and guide the editorial team in data-informed decision-making.
This role sits at the intersection of journalism, technology, product, video, data, and innovation, making it one of the most influential positions in the newsroom.
Key Responsibilities
1. Cross-Platform storytelling strategy
• Lead Compass Media’s storytelling evolution, ensuring every major story has a coordinated print, digital, TV, and social treatment.
• Work with print editors, TV producers, and digital teams to build cohesive, multi-platform story plans that maximise impact.
• Shape daily and long-term coverage through a digital-first lens.
• Ensure all content aligns with editorial priorities and Compass Media’s goal of producing more business and current affairs content.
2. Digital content strategy & daily publishing
• Oversee daily digital content planning across caymancompass.com, compasstv.ky, newsletters and social media assets.
• Working with the Managing Editor and News Director, help guide the editorial team on story selection, headlines, packaging, visuals, and timing.
• Manage homepage curation, push alerts, app content, and digital promotion strategies.
• Working with the Deputy Head of Content & programming, integrate broadcast content into digital pathways and vice versa.
3. Audience intelligence & data analysis
• Lead the digital approach to analytics, ensuring the collection, interpretation, and integration of audience data across platforms.
• Provide monthly digital insights (qualitative) to the Head of News & Content.
• Identify performance patterns, content gaps, platform opportunities, and audience behaviours.
• Use data to optimise storytelling formats, scheduling, headline writing, and video planning.
4. Social media strategy & visual platforms
• Oversee Compass Media’s social strategy across Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and emerging platforms.
• Work with the social media team to develop platform-specific content and short-form video series.
• Ensure social posts are optimised for engagement and aligned with editorial standards.
• Drive data-driven decisions for increased reach and engagement.
5. Innovation, products & emerging technologies
• Identify and champion new digital tools, video formats, interactive content, and cross-platform innovations.
• Working closely with the Deputy Head of Content & Programming, collaborate with product and technology teams to refine Compass Media’s digital experience.
• Lead experimentation with new storytelling technologies (AI-based visuals, interactive graphics, data tools).
6. Video storytelling leadership
• Through training & leadership, and working closely with News Director & Managing Editor, coach the newsroom in producing stronger visual journalism: explainers, short-form video, live coverage, interviews, data visuals, and Field VJ pieces.
• Work with veejays and reporters to strengthen visual storytelling techniques, scripting, field shooting, sequencing, and narrative.
• Join reporters in the field when necessary to coach on framing, sound, structure, and video angles.
7. Editorial leadership
• Serve as a senior voice in editorial planning, newsroom meetings, and long-form project development.
• Uphold editorial standards, accuracy, and public-service journalism.
• Champion a culture of digital-first and visual-first thinking.
Required skills & experience
• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, digital media, visual storytelling, or related field.
• 9–10 years in a newsroom or content-producing environment, including senior editorial decision-making experience.
• Advanced experience in digital publishing, visual journalism, and platform strategy.
• Strong experience coaching reporters, VJs, or producers in digital and video storytelling.
• Skilled in data analysis, audience insights, and digital metrics.
• Proficiency in video editing (Premiere, Final Cut, or similar).
• Excellent writing, scripting, headline, and editing skills.
• Strong understanding of platform-specific storytelling (YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok).
• Proven ability to collaborate across departments.
